10 West, a prominent structure on the Bath University campus, was the first realization of the university's masterplan for the western end of the Claverton Down Campus. It stands proudly on the Bath skyline and serves as one of the campus entrances, symbolizing the beginning of AWW's enduring partnership with the University.
The University of Bath, with its vast community of over 15,000 students and approximately 2,600 staff members, plays a pivotal role in the academic, economic, and social fabric of the city. In response to the university's growth, AWW was commissioned to secure full planning permission for the development of a new teaching and research facility at the Claverton Campus.
10 West now stands as the nucleus of operations for the expanding Department of Psychology. It boasts a well-thought-out design, featuring purpose-built laboratories alongside versatile teaching and research spaces. As the gateway building on the western approach to the campus, it offers breathtaking vistas of the World Heritage site that is the City of Bath.
The engineers at Fassaden+Architektur+Technik played a crucial role in bringing this remarkable design to fruition. Nestled on an exposed hillside, 10 West exhibits robust detailing to ensure longevity and minimal maintenance without sacrificing its aesthetic appeal. The clever integration of glazed and solid elements not only enhances the building's passive control of solar energy but also provides dynamic, open views both inside and out.
